Definition
- Pala is an Italian word for a large altapiece, and is used only for a single picture in which the action, the figures, and scene are treated as being in one consistent space, and occuring in a single pictorial continuum. It is described as a \'pala of a unified type\' in contrast to an ancona (Retabel), which usually consists of several pictures united in a singel frame, but not necessarily consistent between themselves; or a polyptych, which consists normally of a central picture with a number of smaller pictures - usually figures of saints - grouped round it.
