Definition
- Kanonisation f; Kanonisierung f: die Heiligsprechung eines Märtyrers, später auch eines Bekenners usw. durch den Papst. Sie ist seit dem 10. Jh. üblich und für die gesamte kath. Kirche verbindlich. Im frühen Mittelalter war die Heiligsprechung noch durch den Bischof erfolgt und hatte zunächst nur Geltung für die betreffende Diözese. In der orthodoxen Kirche wird weiterhin die Kanonisation durch die Bischofssynode ausgeübt. [Glossarium Artis] (de)
