Die klassische Kelchform zeigt eine kräftig ausladende Kuppa übertrichterförmigem Fuß, meist mit Nodus. In früher Zeit (5. Jh.) war der Kelch oft aus einfachem Material, aus Metall, Hartholz, Glas, Horn, Elfenbein, Stein oder Ton. Seit dem 9. Jh. ist es jedoch ausdrücklich verboten, den zum Messopfer bestimmten Kelch aus unedlen Materialien zu fertigen (Sacrorum Rituum Congregatio) . Er besteht daher aus Edelmetall, vorzugsweise aus vergoldetem Silber. Der Messkelch ist stets henkellos, seine Kuppa ist meist kleiner als die des Spendekelches, weshalb er auch calix minor genannt wird.
